Winterizing Your Pool: A Texan Approach for The Woodlands

If you’ve lived in The Woodlands, TX for more than one winter, you already know—our weather doesn’t really do winter the way the rest of the country does. One week it’s 82° and sunny, the next it dips into the 40s, and then the week after that we’re right back to flip-flops and patio dinners. That’s why winterizing a pool in Montgomery County looks a little different - instead of a full shutdown, it’s all about smart preparation, flexibility, and enjoying your backyard year-round.
In colder climates, winterizing usually means draining lines, covering the pool, and saying goodbye until spring. Here in The Woodlands:
Freezing temperatures are rare and usually short-lived
Pools can stay operational all winter, with many homeowners continue swimming - especially with a pool heater or spa
Texas pools aren’t built to hibernate. They’re built to adapt.

Don't “Close” Your Pool, Be "Winter Ready"
When a freeze is in the forecast:
Keep water circulating
Ensure pumps and equipment are protected
Know where your freeze-protection settings are (and that they’re working)
Most modern systems handle this automatically when properly set up.
Even in cooler months:
Continue basic chemical balancing
Skim debris regularly (leaves don’t stop falling just because it’s winter)
Reduce run times slightly, but don’t turn systems off entirely
Consistent, light maintenance prevents springtime headaches.
Draining plumbing isn’t usually necessary in our climate. Instead:
Insulate exposed pipes if needed
Make sure valves and equipment pads are in good condition
Address small issues now, before they become big ones later
Enjoy Your Pool All Year Long
One of the perks of Texas living is that winter swimming is a real thing.
Heated pools make cool evenings incredibly inviting
Hot tubs and spas shine during the winter months
Crisp air + warm water = peak relaxation
Some of our clients say winter is their favorite time to enjoy their pool because of fewer bugs, quieter evenings, and perfect temperatures with a heater.

Winter in The Woodlands doesn’t mean saying goodbye to your pool. With a little preparation and the right mindset, your backyard stays active, inviting, and ready for whatever Texas weather decides to do next.
